More about Arbuthnot Road

Arbuthnot Road(亞畢諾道) is a road in Central, Hong Kong.

It begins at the Former Central Magistracy, a declared monument of Hong Kong, which is next to Former Victoria Prison.  The road ends at the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens.

The Former Central Magistracy is located at No. 1 Arbuthnot Road, which was constructed from 1913 to 1914.

Closed down in 1979, the Magistracy was used temporarily as a High Court annex, and then as offices by the Immigration Department and Police Officers’ Associations.

The Former Central Magistracy, the old Central Police Station Compound and the old Victoria Prison Compound form as unique cluster of buildings through which the historical developments of the institutions for law and order in Hong Kong since the mid-19th century.

These historical buildings are now being revitalised by Hong Kong Jockey Club called “Tai Kwun”, which will bring a new culture and leisure experience for all to experience.

Arbuthnot Road is named after George Arbuthnot, who worked in the Treasury at the Colonial Office in Hong Kong when the HSBC charter was first drawn up.

Walking up along the old Magistracy from Arbuthnot Road, meets with Chancery Lane. A tranquil lane with art galleries, book stores and coffee shops. Its end then joins Old Bailey Street.

Diner is an American restaurant located at Arbuthnot Road. Its open kitchen serves traditional American burgers with Angus beef. Its bar provides a wide selection of craft beers and bourbons.

Sultan’s Table is a Turkish restaurant on Arbuthnot Road. Its name is same as a longstanding restaurant in Sydney but there are no affiliations. Its traditional Turkish pizza is a must-try dish.

Alchemy Restaurant & Lounge on Arbuthnot Road is a French restaurant headed by Chef Pascal Breant. It brings a new dining experience in the dark. Fun and exciting!
