More about Johnston Road

Johnston Road (莊士敦道) is a major road in Wan Chai, Hong Kong Island. One of the metro station of Wan Chai. The century old transport trams “Ding Ding” (叮叮), goes through the road with its service since opening in 1904.

Johnston Road spans from the junction of Hennessy Road and Steward Road at its East towards another junction of Hennessy Road and Queensway at its west. Southern Playground and Methodist Church in between.

The road is built on the margin of the oldest building cluster in Wan Chai, Many Hong Kong residents are trying to preserve the old buildings and trees from redevelopment.

No. 60 Johnston Road (J Senses and J Residence) and Lee Tung Avenue (Lee Tung Street and Avenue) are two prominent redevelopment projects on Johnston Road which were completed in 2007 and 2016 respectively.

Lee Tung Street, known as the Wedding Card Street by local people, was famed in Hong Kong and overseas as a cluster of publishing and manufacturing of wedding cards and traditional calendars.

The street is a square covering Johnston Road, Spring Garden Lane, Queen’s Road East and Amoy Street. Lee Tung Street was demolished by late 2007 as an urban redevelopment project.

The demolition was recognized to cause irreparable harm to local cultural heritage. The site was converted into a luxury shopping arcade (Lee Tung Street) and housing development (The Avenue) in 2016.

Secondary streets branching out from Johnston Road, for example, Ship Street, Amoy Street, Tai Wong Street, are houses of restaurants and bars.

Fook Lam Moon (福臨門) is a famous Chinese restaurant on Johnston Road.

The restaurant is so called the Cafeteria for the Wealthy (富豪飯堂) and is popular for the rich and famous people in Hong Kong. Michelin 2-starred restaurant. Ranked as one of the Asia’s Best 50 Restaurants.
