The bar scene in Soho Central in changing. It’s no longer the drinking hole for bar lovers. More bars are closing. What’s wrong with Soho?
Soho was once the preferred location in Central for bar operators in HK. A drinking hole for bar lovers. Before, vacant bar spaces were easily taken up once they were in market for lease.
Is Soho no longer the drinking hole for bar lovers? What made Soho and Lan Kwai Fong suddenly become a falling angel?
Background Story of Soho Central
The Soho District in Hong Kong is a dining and entertainment area located in Central and bordering between Lan Kwai Fong and Sheung Wan. The name is derived from its location, which is South of Hollywood Road.
The vibe of Soho was blessed by the completion of Soho Escalator since 1993, which conveniently brings pedestrians from core Central to Soho. Bars and restaurants have started to open along the Escalator.
Bars are difficult to sell liquor late in Soho Central
Lacrucci has witnessed the change of bar scene in Soho of Hong Kong. It was once the preferred spot for bar operators, but it does not sound to be the priority location for bar operators now.
Soho was a pure residential area packed with low-rise walk-up buildings before. Shops on ground floors were mostly grocery shops whereas upstairs was for residential use.
More bars have been set up in Soho in previous 20 years. More traffic. More night activities and hence more noise until late night. It now becomes more difficult for new bars to get a licence to sell liquor late due to complaints by the neighbouring residents.
More restaurants less bars in Soho Central?
Several F&B groups in Hong Kong are very active in Soho Central.
Dining Concepts Group is operating Craftsteak, Olive, Bouchon and Soho Spice on Elgin Street, whereas Black Sheep Restaurant Group is running Belon, Chom Chom, Ho Lee Fook, La Vache and Stazione Novella in Soho District.
Lacrucci trusts that more restaurants instead of bars are going to Soho Central in the near future.
Pirata Group has taken up the shop on Staunton Street for a new Meat concept which was originally occupied by Jaspars. Woolly Pig Concepts will also set up its second restaurant on Staunton Street after 12000 Francs on Elgin Street.
