Why Hong Kong has such a high concentration of restaurants?
Hong Kong is one of the highest concentrations of restaurants per capita in the world. Named as an ‘Eating Paradise” too. Hong Kong is full of restaurants catering to whatever you want to eat from street food to fine dining.
Total number of Food and Beverage establishments in Hong Kong has continued to increase in the recent years, no matter if the economy was going up or down.
The main reasons are the fast work pace and limited habitat space in Hong Kong. Eating out is a routine for many Hong Kong people. From breakfast, lunch to dinner. From Happy hour, tea time, to late night dinner. Multiple meals per day is Chinese eating culture too.
Demography and culture in Hong Kong created a demand of variety of restaurants, cafes and bars.
A mixture of Chinese and expatriates in Hong Kong provide an attractive stage for international food and beverage operators and chefs to show their muscles and talents.
Will the number of restaurant in Hong Kong continue to increase?
Number of restaurants in Hong Kong has continued to increase, even though the restaurant sudden closure tides were once severe in 2016-2017.
Hong Kong has around 15,000 restaurants registered with General Restaurant and Light Refreshment Licence, which has been increased by almost 10% in the previous two years.
Hope the restaurant closure tide will not happen again in 2018. Best wishes to Hong Kong Food and Beverage Community!
